Our Boys Heading to Western Caribbean On Carnival Glory
West Caribbean cruises (or Western Caribbean) are just as fun-filled, inclusive Caribbean vacations for the entire family as a Bahamas or Eastern Caribbean cruise.
You will be happy to know that there are many such itineraries available.
My Family At Beach in Cozumel
My family's first cruise was a 5-day Western Caribbean sailing onboard Carnival Sensation from the Tampa Cruise Terminal in Florida.
Believe or not, but our second inclusive family cruise was also a West Caribbean cruise - this time a 7-day sailing from Port Canaveral.
We enjoyed both of them. However, while the first cruise was too short and left us longing for more, the second cruise felt too long after Day 6.
Since then, we have been on two additional 5-day cruises to the Western Caribbean.
We have visited ports such as Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico and Belize City, Belize.
Let us move on...
Your West Caribbean cruise will take you to places of sheer fun and delight and find you good people to interact with.
Some popular ports of call on your Western Caribbean Cruise may include:
1. Ocho Rios, Jamaica;
2. Montego Bay, Jamaica;
3. Falmouth, Jamaica;
4. Georgetown, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands;
5. Labadee, Haiti (Royal Caribbean International's private resort port);
6. Mexican ports of call such as Cozumel, Progreso and Costa Maya; and stops in Central America including Roatan, Honduras and Belize City, Belize.
Our first west Caribbean cruise made stops in Grand Cayman and Cozumel and what a delight that was!
We toured the small island of Grand Cayman and were given a walk through history and some historical sites, while enjoying the local cuisine.
In Cozumel, we spent time on the beach as well as bargaining with the vendors. We also had some authentic Mexican food.
Delicious!
One other thing you will love about Cozumel is that the cruise ship pulls right into the pier.
This Mexican port of call has three piers accommodating many Caribbean cruise ships annually.
In fact, over 1 million tourists visit Cozumel each year!
As for Grand Cayman, the Carnival Sensation had to dock away from shore and we sailed on tenders (smaller boats) to the pier.
It was amazing, although somewhat scary at first, as we realized how much closer we were to the very deep waters of the Caribbean Sea.
Our second West Caribbean cruise made stops in Costa Maya, Cozumel, Belize City and Nassau, Bahamas. My best port of call was Nassau.
When we arrived - again the ship pulled right up to the pier in Nassau Harbour - we went ashore and took a taxi to Paradise Island and the Atlantis Resort.
Generally, a taxi ride to Paradise Island from the pier costs $4 per person one-way.
We toured the spectacular Atlantis, remarking at its beautiful design and the splendor of its aquarium - we only saw a peek of the aquarium from upstairs. We decided against paying the fee to see the entire aquarium.
The cost to Atlantis' Aquarium was about $30 per adult and $18 per children.
From the Atlantis we walked to a public beach not far away - just behind the RIU Palace Resort - another hot spot on Paradise Island. We spent most of time at the beach and then boarded a taxi back to the pier.
Before returning to the ship, we shopped for souvenirs and scored some good deals.
By the way, you can purchase duty free items in the Bahamas - alcohol, cigars, jewelry, etc.
Undoubtedly, our first west Caribbean cruise was a blast! Yours can be too!
What is really great about Western Caribbean cruises is that there are several major cruise lines with sailings all year-round.
If you know of a major Caribbean cruise line, then just about all of them offer cruise itineraries to the Western Caribbean.
These include:
*Carnival Cruise Lines;
*Celebrity Cruise Line;
*Holland America Cruises;
*Norwegian Cruise Line;
*Princess Cruises; and,
*Royal Caribbean International.
By the way, you will be excited to know that Royal Caribbean offers west Caribbean cruises aboard the world's two largest cruise ships - Oasis of the Seas and Allure of Seas.
Now that is pretty cool!
Not only do you have great places to explore - like Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios, Jamaica - you have spectacular Caribbean cruise ships to get you there.
Generally, Western Caribbean cruises sail from cruise terminals in southern Florida and the southern United States.
There are rare chances of west Caribbean cruises departing from elsewhere.
However, some cruise lines such as Carnival Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International do have Caribbean cruises sailing to western ports of call from from Port Canaveral on the eastern flank of the Florida coast.
Ports Offering Most West Caribbean Cruises are:
1. Fort Lauderdale Cruise Terminal, Florida (Port Everglades);
2. Miami Cruise Terminal, Florida;
3. Tampa Cruise Terminal, Florida;
4. New Orleans Cruise Terminal, Louisiana
5. Houston Cruise Terminal, Texas; and,
6. Galveston Cruise Terminal, Texas.
Let us now look at some available itineraries to ports of call in the Western Caribbean.
